Medallion Circle Award - Nomination Procedure and Eligibility

The Philadelphia Archdiocesan Holy Name Union presents the Medallion Circle Award, our highest honor, for outstanding service to the Holy Name Society on the archdiocesan level.  Clergy earning this Award receive a Silver Medal; lay persons receive a Bronze Medal.  Because this award is a National Award, whose presentation has been delegated to Diocesan Unions, we are permitted to award only four such awards per year.  The PAHNU, however, awards only 2 such Medallions per year, 1 to a priest, and 1 to a lay member.  In the past, multiple awards have been given to priests in the same year, but this practice is no longer followed.

Nominations may be made only by Executive Board Members.  Customarily, lay awardees have normally served as Archdiocesan Officers, although Parish Presidents who have encouraged their societies to support PAHNU events are also eligible.  Because the Archdiocesan Spiritual Director is the only priest who is regularly active with the PAHNU on the archdiocesan level, clergy may receive this award for outstanding parish Holy Name Service.  While both priests and deacons would be eligible, thusfar only  priests have received the Silver Medal from the PAHNU.

Thomas Ryan Award - Nomination Procedure and Eligibility

The Philadelphia Archdiocesan Holy Name Union preasents the Thomas Ryan Award to an outstanding Holy Name member who has given distinguished service to the Holy Name Society at the parish level.

To be eligible for consideration, a nominee must receive both a Letter of Approval from the pastor, and a Letter of Nomination from the Parish Holy Name Society's President.  Teh pastor's letter need merely state that the nominee is a practicing Catholic, and a Holy Name member in good standing.  The President's letter, however, should be more detailed and set forth the merits of the nominee, so that the nominee may be compared with nominees from other parishes.

More specifically, the letter should, at minimum, cover the following points:

Longevity in the parish society.  If the nominee moved into the parish fairly recently (e.g. within the past 10 years), the letter may also state whatever is known  about the person's Holy Name membership in the former parish.  Other things being equal, a long term of distinguished service will be valued more heavily than a shorter term.  On the other hand, a few years of excellent service will outweigh many years of mediocrity.

The letter should cover such details as offices held, committees chaired and services performed for the parish through the Holy Name Society.  The letter should reflect the level of effort and dedication shown by the member and the fruits thereof (e.g. membership increase attained while serving as Membership Chair).

The letter should detail the nominee's record of faithful attendance  Holy Name functions, with particular emphasis on the Monthly Corporate Communion Mass, if it is held at your parish [if not, please so state; this factor will not be held against your nominee].

Ultimately, the letter should demonstrate how the nominee's participation in the Holy Namw Society has reflected the words of Jesus "Hallowed Be Thy Name".

Letters of Approval and Nomination should be submitted together, and are requested to be submitted to the Awards Chair.  Letters should be mailed to Mr. Francis Franzini, 1505 S. 9th St., Philadelphia, PA 19147.  Questions should be referred to John F. Bradley (610) 789-1370.

John Schaum Memorial Award - Nomination Procedure and Eligibility

This Award was formerly known as the Railroad Holy Name Mass Award.  From 1999-2002, the awardee was selected by the Executive Board from among persons who had given outstanding service to the Railroad Holy Name Union, prior to its merger with the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Holy Name Union in 1998.

In 2003, this award was re-named the John Schaum Memorial Award, and the criteria were modified, so that currently it is presented to a person who has given outstanding service to the Holy Name Society, at either the parish or archdiocesan level, or both, but who was never honored by the PAHNU during their lifetime.  The awardee is chosen by the Awards Committee.
