Opening Prayer for guidance to Blessed John was led by Pres. Bill McLaughlin Minutes of meeting of 11/15 were reviewed Blessed John Mass Schedule for 2012, which had been prepared by Steve Gibbone, was distributed to attending members. A discussion followed as to how further notices will be distributed to as many members as possible in the future. Joe Galorma will still handle telephone reminders for now, but there will be a telephone tree set up in the near future to cover as many members as possible. The new updated contact list of members should be available in early 2012. Future schedules and notices will also be given out to attending members and guests at the Saturday Blessed John Masses. Discussion on the TV Mass Schedule for 2012 was tabled until January Meeting. The Blessed John Saturday Mass is scheduled for January 14th at St. Monica Parish, 1702 Ritner St., at 8:30 AM. The schedule for the entire year will be handed out at this Mass. Meeting dates for all of 2012 were discussed but not determined. However, meetings will probably be on a night during the week. Opening Prayer for guidance to Blessed John was led by Pres. Bill McLaughlin followed by a short personal spiritual reflection on Luke Chap.11 “…Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find,etc.”, and what it meant to various members.
John Bradley has volunteered to deliver next meetings Spiritual reflection.
Acknowledgement of the new officers followed with a discussion on the committees in place already and the possibility of creating or revamping present committees.
At this time Past President Steve Gibbone stepped forward to volunteer to chair the 2nd Saturday Committee.
John Bradley will continue to chair the TV Mass,
Jack Weber the Pen Pals, Sean Clarke the Annual Blessed John Mass,and Bob Leso will continue as Finance chairperson with the help of Steve Gibbone. There will also be an Evangelization committee with chairperson TBD at December meeting. This committee will be charged primarily with growing the PAHNU membership, and spreading word of who we are and what we do. The particulars will be a work in progress as we develop our new agendas. A sub-committee was formed to assist Sean Clarke with the updating of the contact list for all current members and parishes presently in PAHNU.
Our mission statement was discussed and reviewed and was accepted by all attendees and is as follows: -To create more reverence and respect for the very name of Jesus Christ -To pray for the canonization of Blessed John of Vercelli -To continue the work of Blessed John, by word and deed -To deepen the faith and spirituality of all PAHNU members -To provide fellowship among our men -To support and promote the Holy Name Societies in all parishes throughout the Philadelphia Archdiocese The future meeting dates were discussed but not determined at this time. The December meeting will again be at St. Martin of Tours @7:15 on 12/13. The January Meeting will be at Maternity B.V.M. but the date will be determined at the December Mtg. Future meeting will be decided on availability of place and time. Notification will be sent to all e-mail and phone contacts affected. John Bradley will provide information on the HN convention as it becomes available. Our Next Scheduled Saturday Mass/Rosary is at Our Lady of Mt.Carmel, S.Phila. (S.E. cor of 3rd & Wolf Streets) at 8:00 AM Steve Gibbone will follow with the 2012 schedule of Saturday Masses.

The President called the meeting to order at approximately 12:30PM. In attendance: Gerardo Alfaro, John F. Bradley, Francis J. Coyle, T. Paul DiVito, Steve Gibbone, Joseph J. Gilorma, Nick Gulli, Robert Leso, Mike Mays, Carlos F. Ortiz, Francis Platchek
Paul DiVito led the opening prayer. The prayer from the new Mass card with the Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed John of Vercelli was recited by all.
Paul DiVito spoke briefly on the topic of the new Mass card, their cost.
Three HNS members joined the executive board meeting this month: Frank Coyle from St. Joan of Arc parish, Mike Mays from St. Agnes-St. John & Presentation BVM parishes, and Frank Platchek from St. John’s parish in Manayunk. Each man has been an active member of their respective parish’s Holy Name Society for many years, and have expressed an interest in either learning more or becoming active member of the executive board at the Archdiocesan level. Additionally, Frank (Dutch) Platchek petitioned the board for help in reviving the Holy Name Society at his parish.
Treasurer Robert Leso reported an income of $514.14 and expenses of $240.00 over the past month, with the Treasury balance of $3,049.12 as of March 20, 2009, which includes $2,000.00 in the Exchange Merchants Fund. His report was accepted by the executive board.
Secretary Nick Gulli only had a single copy of the meeting minutes on hand, and requested that any member with access to the internet and the PAHNU web site make copies for there records. At the break, Nick made copies of last month’s meeting minutes and submitted them to the executive board for review.
President Steve Gibbone called for a report on the monthly Mass and schedule. Paul DiVito passed out the monthly Mass schedule for the last six months of this year, created by Carlos Ortiz. Paul DiVito reported that there was a strong turnout last week at Maternity BVM. Maternity BVM is a little different than other parish monthly Masses in that the Rosary was recited prior to the 8AM Mass, celebrated by Fr. Paul Quinter, the pastor of the parish. Paul reported that next month the Mass will be celebrated the Saturday after Easter, 18 April, 8AM, at St. Agnes-St. John Church at 4th and Brown Sts. in Philadelphia. Paul DiVito requested of the members in attendance that they bring someone with them to the Mass.
Paul DiVito reported plans for the Annual PAHNU Banquet. The newly formed committee consists of John Bradley, Jack Weber, Jerry Alfaro, Carlos Ortiz, and Paul DiVito. Carlos Ortiz has accepted the responsibility of chairman for this committee. The Banquet Committee made the decision to forego this year’s event and focus on the event in 2010. After deliberation for the best time to hold the event, a date of Friday, 23 April, 2010, was submitted. The motion was accepted and seconded by the executive board. The next decision that will be discussed and presented to the board will be the location of the banquet. Paul petitioned the membership for banquet location suggestions. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, 8 May, 6:30PM, at the Catholic Institute for Evangelization. Additionally, Paul provided to committee chairman Carlos Ortiz several banquet books from past years to get ideas for creating the 2010 book.
Jerry Alfaro reported on Pro-Life issues; he provided several handouts during his report. Jerry handed out the TV schedule for Father John Corapi on EWTN, who often preaches and reports on the efforts and progress made in the name of Pro-Life advocates. Also, at St. Veronica’s church, every first Thursday of the month there is a 1 hour Adoration at 7PM; every first Friday there is Divine Mercy Chaplet and Mass at 6:15PM; every first Saturday of the month there is Adoration starting at 10AM til 4:30PM. Jerry reported that next Saturday, 28 March, there will be a concert at 7PM in St. Veronica’s church. Cardinal Rigali will be celebrating Mass at St. Veronica’s on Sunday, 29 March, at 9:30 and 11:00AM, in honor of the church’s 100th year anniversary. All are welcome.
A decade of the Rosary for the intention of the Canonization of Blessed John of Vercelli was led by Frank Coyle and a short intermission followed.
President Steve Gibbone called the meeting back to order and called on Carlos Ortiz to report on the PAHNU Monthly Mass schedule. Carlos pointed out that Maternity BVM, is the only church that we visit in our schedule, which recites the Rosary before the 8AM Mass; the Rosary starts at 7:30AM. Subsequent schedules he provides will highlight this difference. The schedule for the second half of 2009 was provided to the membership.
Paul DiVito reported that Jack and Sophie Weber will be visiting Our Lady Help of Christians Holy Name Society, in Abington, on the second Tuesday in April, the 9th, to speak about Mary Mother of Captives Pen Pals program that they actively run. Paul called on the membership to promote Jack’s & Sophie’s efforts by inviting them to speak at their HNS meeting sometime in the near future.
Frank Coyle volunteered for the Retreat chairman position and will begin organizing a Sick & Vigil Retreat sometime this year at Malvern, St. Joseph’s on the Hill Retreat House. Frank Coyle will assume the Sergeant at Arms and House chairman positions, providing refreshment starting at the next meeting.
Paul DiVito reported that Sean Clark had a set back in collecting a complete list of current Holy Name Societies in the Philadelphia Archdiocese in that the database file has been lost. Curtiss McGaffin and Paul DiVito are assisting Sean recreating the compilation of this list, which will become a valuable source of networking for our union. The goal is to have the list complete by August, 2009. Upon completion, the list will be posted to the PAHNU Web Site.
Paul DiVito reported that the 30th Annual Mass for the Canonization for Bless John of Vercelli will be held on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 701 Gaul St. in Philadelphia. The goal this year is to have at least 200 people in attendance at this Mass. Two meetings have been held for the organization of the Mass, and another meeting will be held in two weeks.
A Letter from The National Association of the Holy Name Society and two prayer petitions were handed out by Paul. He asked that we fill out the petitions and mail them with any intentions, which will be set on the Alter in the Prayer Room for 1 year and will be remembered at every Mass at the Holy Name of Jesus Church.
Paul DiVito spoke with Carl Knot in Brooklyn, NY, who has started a program to get Hispanics involved in the Holy Name Society. Paul provided flyers to Carlos Ortiz and Jerry Alfaro with information pertaining to this program to see if it may be of interest and use for the Hispanic community in Philadelphia.
Paul DiVito spoke about strong favors documented by way of Blessed John of Vercelli, and their use as the basis for the Canonization of Blessed John.
President Steve Gibbone mentioned the Phillies game on Wednesday, 27 May, 2009 at 7:05PM. He asked that members to promote the game at their local parish.
