The following events and activities were discussed and acted upon: Banquet Committee Carlos Ortiz has been in touch with the people at Guidos to come up with a suitable price and time for the event. March 21, 2009

The President called the meeting to order at approximately 12:30PM.   In attendance:  Gerardo Alfaro, John F. Bradley, Francis J. Coyle, T. Paul DiVito, Steve Gibbone, Joseph J. Gilorma, Nick Gulli, Robert Leso, Mike Mays, Carlos F. Ortiz, Francis Platchek

Paul DiVito led the opening prayer. The prayer from the new Mass card with the Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed John of Vercelli was recited by all.

Paul DiVito spoke briefly on the topic of the new Mass card, their cost.

Three HNS members joined the executive board meeting this month: Frank Coyle from St. Joan of Arc parish, Mike Mays from St. Agnes-St. John & Presentation BVM parishes, and Frank Platchek from St. John’s parish in Manayunk.  Each man has been an active member of their respective parish’s Holy Name Society for many years, and have expressed an interest in either learning more or becoming active member of the executive board at the Archdiocesan level.  Additionally, Frank (Dutch) Platchek petitioned the board for help in reviving the Holy Name Society at his parish.

Treasurer Robert Leso reported an income of $514.14 and expenses of $240.00 over the past month, with the Treasury balance of $3,049.12 as of March 20, 2009, which includes $2,000.00 in the Exchange Merchants Fund.  His report was accepted by the executive board.

Secretary Nick Gulli only had a single copy of the meeting minutes on hand, and requested that any member with access to the internet and the PAHNU web site make copies for there records.  At the break, Nick made copies of last month’s meeting minutes and submitted them to the executive board for review.

President Steve Gibbone called for a report on the monthly Mass and schedule. Paul DiVito passed out the monthly Mass schedule for the last six months of this year, created by Carlos Ortiz.  Paul DiVito reported that there was a strong turnout last week at Maternity BVM.  Maternity BVM is a little different than other parish monthly Masses in that the Rosary was recited prior to the 8AM Mass, celebrated by Fr. Paul Quinter, the pastor of the parish.  Paul reported that next month the Mass will be celebrated the Saturday after Easter, 18 April, 8AM, at St. Agnes-St. John Church at 4th and Brown Sts. in Philadelphia.  Paul DiVito requested of the members in attendance that they bring someone with them to the Mass.

Paul DiVito reported plans for the Annual PAHNU Banquet.  The newly formed committee consists of John Bradley, Jack Weber, Jerry Alfaro, Carlos Ortiz, and Paul DiVito.  Carlos Ortiz has accepted the responsibility of chairman for this committee.  The Banquet Committee made the decision to forego this year’s event and focus on the event in 2010.   After deliberation for the best time to hold the event, a date of Friday, 23 April, 2010, was submitted.  The motion was accepted and seconded by the executive board.  The next decision that will be discussed and presented to the board will be the location of the banquet.  Paul petitioned the membership for banquet location suggestions.  The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, 8 May, 6:30PM, at the Catholic Institute for Evangelization.  Additionally, Paul provided to committee chairman Carlos Ortiz several banquet books from past years to get ideas for creating the 2010 book.

Jerry Alfaro reported on Pro-Life issues; he provided several handouts during his report.  Jerry handed out the TV schedule for Father John Corapi on EWTN, who often preaches and reports on the efforts and progress made in the name of Pro-Life advocates.  More information may be found at http://www.fathercorapi.com.  Also, at St. Veronica’s church, every first Thursday of the month there is a 1 hour Adoration at 7PM; every first Friday there is Divine Mercy Chaplet and Mass at 6:15PM; every first Saturday of the month there is Adoration starting at 10AM til 4:30PM.  Jerry reported that next Saturday, 28 March, there will be a concert at 7PM in St. Veronica’s church.  Cardinal Rigali will be celebrating Mass at St. Veronica’s on Sunday, 29 March, at 9:30 and 11:00AM, in honor of the church’s 100th year anniversary.  All are welcome.

A decade of the Rosary for the intention of the Canonization of Blessed John of Vercelli was led by Frank Coyle and a short intermission followed.

President Steve Gibbone called the meeting back to order and called on Carlos Ortiz to report on the PAHNU Monthly Mass schedule.  Carlos pointed out that Maternity BVM, is the only church that we visit in our schedule, which recites the Rosary before the 8AM Mass; the Rosary starts at 7:30AM.  Subsequent schedules he provides will highlight this difference.  The schedule for the second half of 2009 was provided to the membership.

Paul DiVito reported that Jack and Sophie Weber will be visiting Our Lady Help of Christians Holy Name Society, in Abington, on the second Tuesday in April, the 9th, to speak about Mary Mother of Captives Pen Pals program that they actively run.  Paul called on the membership to promote Jack’s & Sophie’s efforts by inviting them to speak at their HNS meeting sometime in the near future.

Frank Coyle volunteered for the Retreat chairman position and will begin organizing a Sick & Vigil Retreat sometime this year at Malvern, St. Joseph’s on the Hill Retreat House.  Frank Coyle will assume the Sergeant at Arms and House chairman positions, providing refreshment starting at the next meeting.

Paul DiVito reported that Sean Clark had a set back in collecting a complete list of current Holy Name Societies in the Philadelphia Archdiocese in that the database file has been lost.  Curtiss McGaffin and Paul DiVito are assisting Sean recreating the compilation of this list, which will become a valuable source of networking for our union.  The goal is to have the list complete by August, 2009.  Upon completion, the list will be posted to the PAHNU Web Site.

Paul DiVito reported that the 30th Annual Mass for the Canonization for Bless John of Vercelli will be held on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 701 Gaul St. in Philadelphia.  The goal this year is to have at least 200 people in attendance at this Mass.  Two meetings have been held for the organization of the Mass, and another meeting will be held in two weeks.

A Letter from The National Association of the Holy Name Society and two prayer petitions were handed out by Paul.  He asked that we fill out the petitions and mail them with any intentions, which will be set on the Alter in the Prayer Room for 1 year and will be remembered at every Mass at the Holy Name of Jesus Church.

Paul DiVito spoke with Carl Knot in Brooklyn, NY, who has started a program to get Hispanics involved in the Holy Name Society.   Paul provided flyers to Carlos Ortiz and Jerry Alfaro with information pertaining to this program to see if it may be of interest and use for the Hispanic community in Philadelphia.

Paul DiVito spoke about strong favors documented by way of Blessed John of Vercelli, and their use as the basis for the Canonization of Blessed John.

President Steve Gibbone mentioned the Phillies game on Wednesday, 27 May, 2009 at 7:05PM.  He asked that members to promote the game at their local parish.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made.  There was a closing prayer by Carlos Ortiz in Spanish.
